Kun Faya Kun Meaning & Lyrics Translation – Rockstar

Kun Faya Kun Meaning & Origin

Kun Faya Kun Meaning: The origin is from the arabic words “Kun” which means “to be” or “to exist” & “Faya Kun” means “it is”. So the literal translation of Kun Faya Kun is “Be ,and it is”.

Kun Faya Kun is one of the rare songs that had me totally floored from the first moment I heard it. Easily one of AR Rehman’s and Irshad Kamli’s finest works, the beauty of the song is not just in the words or the music but in the complete conceptualization.

After receiving multiple request to translate this song, I decided to give it a shot. Firstly, I need to thank my dear friend Ahmed Shariff who explained to me the meaning of the title of the song and a few verses of the lyrics. Most of my work below are meanings that I could piece together from the web. Please feel free to correct me by posting a message in the comments section.

Kun Faya Kun Lyrics Meaning

Song: Kun Faya Kun
Movie: Rockstar (2011)
Lyrics: Irshad Kamli
Music: A.R. Rehman
Vocals: A. R. Rahman, Javed Ali, Mohit Chauhan

Ya Nizamuddin Auliya,
Ya Nizamuddin Salqa

Oh Ruler of the Saints,
Oh Ruler of the crestfallen

Kadam Badhaa Le, Hadon Ko Mitaa Le,
Aaja Khaali Pan Mein Pee Ka Ghar Tera,
Tere Bin Khaali Aaja, Khali Pan Mein
Tere Bin Khaali Aaja, Khali Pan Mein

Take a step forward, destroy these distances
Come into this void, the home of your beloved
Without you there is emptiness, come into this void

Rangreza(3)

He who fills me with color

Kun Faya Kun…

[He said] Be, & it is!

Jab Kahin Pe Kuch Nahi.
Bhi Nahi Tha
Wahi Tha Wahi Tha
Wahi Tha Wahi Tha

When, there was nothing,
He was the one,
the only one.

Woh Jo Mujh Mein Samaya
Woh Jo Tujh Mein Samaya
Maula Wahi Wahi Maaya

He is the one who is in my soul,
He is the one in your soul,
O dear Lord, He is the one that is mystery

Kun Faya Kun, Kun Faya Kun
SadaqAllahul-alliyul-Azeem

[He said] Be, & it is! Be, & it is!
The truth is Allah, the sublime, the magnificent

Rangreza Rang Mera Tan Mera Mann,
Le Le Rangaayi Chaahe Tan Chaahe Mann,

My painter, color my body my soul
Take away the colors, from the body, from the soul

Sajra Savera Mere Tan Barse
Kajra Andhera Teri Jalti Lau
Qatra Mila Jo Tere Dar Par Se
O Maula… Maula…

The Morning showers(blessings) rain on me
And it cleans up the dark soul of mine which is like darkness of night.
Its only for the drop of nourishment that flows from yours,
Oh Lord…

Kun Faya Kun,Kun Faya Kun

[He said] Be, & it is! Be, & it is!

SadaqAllahul-alliyul-Azeem
Sadaqa Rasulu-hun nabi-yun-kareem
Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam

The truth is Allah, the sublime, the magnificent
The truth is his Apostle
May the blessing and peace be upon him

O Mujhpe Karam Sarkar Tera
Araz Tujhe, Karde Mujhe, Mujhse Hi Riha
Ab Mujhko Bhi Ho, Deedaar Mera
Karde Mujhe, Mujhse Hi Riha
Mujhse Hi Rihaaaaaaaa

It would be your generosity upon me, Oh master
My request, Free me from myself
Even I should see myself
Make me free from myself
From myself…

Mann Ke Mere Ye Bharam,
Kachche Mere Ye Karam
Leke Chale Hai Kahaan,
Main Toh Jaanoon Hi Na

There is a mirage in my mind
For the weakness of my actions
Have got me where…
I am lost…

Tu Hai Mujhmein Samaya,
Kahaan Leke Mujhe Aaya,
Main Hoon Tujhmein Samaya,
Tere Peeche Chala Aaya,

You are in me,
Where have you brought me
I have given myself to you,
In your footsteps I follow

Tera Hi Main Ek Saaya,
Tune Mujhko Banaya,
Main Toh Jag Ko Na Bhaaya,
Tune Gale Se Lagaya
Ab Tu Hi Hai Khudaya,
Sach Tu Hi Hai Khudaya

I am your shadow
You have created me
I didn’t fit in the world
Yet you embraced me
Only you are the Just,
Only you are the Truth…

Kun Faya Kun
Kun Faya Kun…

[He said] Be, & it is!
Be, & it is!

    Hi,

Found your blog while blog-hopping. Wonderful collection of songs.

Please find a few translations as per my understanding.

Hadon ko miTaa Le – destroying all limits (Hadein – limits)

Mayaa – is better translated as Illusion

    Leke Chale Hai Kahaan,
Main Toh Jaanoon Hi Na – where has it taken me, I know not.

Main Toh Jag Ko Na Bhaaya, – the world did not like me

  • Hi Vinutha,

Thanks you for visiting my blog and for your valuable inputs.

While every one of your translations is correct, I have actually picked up translations based on lines rather than words, paying special attention to what the lyricist wanted to communicate.
For Example, Hadein as you said means limits, but poetically also means boundaries. I chose the latter based on the previous line : “Kadam Badhaa Le” coz I felt the flow worked better in that context.

Similarly the line “Main Toh Jag Ko Na Bhaaya” was translated based on the experience of the protagonist of the movie, rather than the literally.

To be honest I have taken a bit of poetic liberties with the translation and your translation would fit perfectly too :)

Thank you again and keep reading :)

    Hi,
Thanks a lot for your translation and this song touched me deep. Actually you might find it silly for saying this…but the most remembered scene from the film:Rock Star for me is… these particular shots/visuals…scene with this song.
    Ok …
Thank you again but I must tell you that I am a Buddhist from Sri Lanka:)
    Cheers!
    Satya
    PS
I too am a film buff and a film maker…

“Le Le Rangaayi” means to give something (generally money) back for the services, so the meaning of

“Le Le Rangaayi Chaahe Tan Chaahe Mann” is
“in exchange, take my body or my soul”

In the heart of each religion lies this concept that there is god within. Masked by the mirage we lay at his footsteps, the one without a second. The simplicity in every detail of his creation is a joy that we could least perceive. Bless us all almighty.

it is i am Your shade not shadow, one must remmeber we are not shadows of Allah, He is One and nothing can be taken away from Him, whereas we are always in loss without His guidance. Please also use captials when talking About Allah, such as ‘He’ ‘You’ etc, thank you

    Hi,

It may be very late to reply bt still .
I really appreciate your efforts. Thank you for such a melodious translation.
Just wanted to clarify one term .”Kun Faya Kun” wt I know it means rise up or wake up .. start again.
    Isn’t it?

  • Kabali K

My Hindi is rudimentary at best, so pardon me if I’m wildly off track, but doesn’t

“Kahi pe kuch nahi bhi nahi tha wohi tha”
    mean
“When there wasn’t even nothing, he was there”

I always thought the poet was striving to convey something really deep – There wasn’t just nothing, but not even nothing. Maybe (s)he means there was not even the awareness that there’s nothing, or not even the idea there was nothing.

    • Pravi

Absolutely..i agree..jab kahin pe kuch NAHI BHI NAHI THA..

  • Amjad Miandad

It needs bit of correction in the meanings when it says

Rangreza Rang Mera Tan Mera Mann,
Le Le Rangaayi Chaahe Tan Chaahe Mann,

Le le rangaayi (rangaayi here is the payback of services to rangrez) who is being asked to color the body and heart, so it would be like
“take in return what you wish body or heart”
