Phir Dekhiye… (Rock On) – Lyrics English Meaning/Translation

Javed Akhtar

Before Javed Akhtar wrote the beautiful poems in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, he wrote a gem of a poem in another Farhan Akhtar starrer. Rock On sent the critcs raving and won the National Award and many other awards, but I felt there wasnt much justice done to the most beautiful part of the movie.

Phir Dekhiye, is one of those songs that makes me wish I knew how to play the guitar. Its words intermingle with the strumming so well it feels incomplete without the score. The words are so well written that the meanings of the words take multiple levels. This is one of the best philosophical songs out there that bends itself to your thoughts…

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Album: Rock On!
Vocals: Caralisa Monteiro
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
Here is my translation of the beautiful song…

Aankhon mein jiske, Koi to khwaab hai;
Khush hai wohi jo, Thoda betaab hai;
Zindagi mein koi, Arzoo ke jiye…
Phir Dekhiye…

In whose eyes there are dreams
Happy is the one, who is restless
Desire for something in life…
Then watch…

Honton pe jiske, Koi to geet hai;
Woh haare bhi to, Uski hi jeet hai;
Dil mein jo geet hai, Gungunaa lijiye…
Phir Dekhiye…

On whose lips there is a song
Even in defeat, he finds victory
What song lies in the heart, hum it…
Then watch…

Yaadon mein jiske, Kisi ka naam hai;
Sapno ke jaise, Uske har shaam hai;
Koi to ho jisse, Apna dil dijeye…
Phir Dekhiye…

In whose thoughts there lies a name
Whose every evening is like a dream
Give your heart to somebody…
Then watch…

Khwaab bun yeh zara;
Geet sun yeh zara;
Phool chun yeh zara…
Phir Dekhiye…

Weave this dream,
Listen to this song,
Pluck this flower…
Then watch…

  • One of my favorites too! I am loving the guitar strumming songs coming out in movies in recent years. They have very simple (and hence hummable) song structure and put the focus back on the lyrics.
