The IIFA has chosen ‘Paheli’ to represent India in the oscars. The critically acclaimed movie “Black” was rejected this honour for unclear reasons. When asked about the choice the representative of the IIFA said
The choice for the jury was extremely difficult. The films were really of high calibre. We had resolved that we’d have discussions only after all the screenings. We had bargained for an hour’s discussion. We went on discussing for an hour and half. All of us in the jury wrote down our recommendation, almost like a citation. We were absolutely unanimous in the selection of Paheli.
My first expression about this was “What the F@#$”. Personally I believed the decision was rigged. How else could some one compare a classic and in my opinion Oscar-Worthy movie like Black to a movie that neither recieved critical acclaim or did even respectable at the box office.
This decision cost us an oscar and only the IIFA is to blame(I dont see any way Paheli will win). As for Sanjay Leela Bhansali… Sir you have created an classic one that i place close to movies like I am Sam and Forrest Gump. So screw the IIFA and the Best Foreign Film… promote “Black” and I believe it can be nominated for the Best Film Oscar.
