Guts…

A motion picture, or music, or television, they have to maintain a certain decorum in order to be broadcast to a vast audience. Other forms of mass media cost too much to product to risk reaching only a limited audience. Only one person. But a book… A book is cheap to print and bind. A book is as private and consensual as sex. A book takes time and effort to consume – something that gives a reader every chance to walk away. Actually, so few people make the effort to read that it’s difficult to call books a ‘mass medium’. No one really gives a damn about books. No one has bothered to ban a book in decades.

….

These are the places that only books can go.

This is the advantage that books still have. This is why I write.

Sabha Parva

The second volume of Mahābhārata is probably the most important of all its volumes. It covers all the actions and inaction that lead eventually to get great war at Kurukshetra. The volume is much shorter than the first(almost half in length) and covers the story from the building of great “Maya Sabha” till the banishment of the Pandavas to exile.

Krishna becomes a major part of the story in this volume. The prince of Dwarka exhibits his amazing understanding of politics and sense of manipulation to great effect in this volume. It is amazing how often the term “fate” appears in the ancient text. The idea that all these great people knew their destiny and walked the path of Dharma or Adharma depending on the role they played is simply beautiful.

Down that Memory Lane…

Lately I have been dedicating time to clean up my room, to the delight of my mother. Considering I have a lot of crap unused stuff stored away, I thought its the right time to minimize and put away things I dont use regularly to a proper storage. If you want to install custom storage cabinets and shelves in your home, you may consider hiring a Custom Closet Company in Philadelphia, PA.

A couple of days back I decided to take out all my old college books and move them. The main idea being that I could not find a couple of my old books and thought they are mixed up with those books. Fortunately I found the books I was looking for, but more importantly I found pieces of the past along the way.

Adi Parva

mahabharata

I just finished reading Volume 1 of the Mahābhārata known as the “Adi Parva“. Mahābhārata is one of the two greatest epics of India, the other being Ramayana. The epic has Eighteen Volumes, each of about 300 pages of Sanskrit Poetry. The english translation I am reading is about 850 pages in length.

As most of my friends I have spent a lot of my childhood listening, reading and watching stories from the Mahābhārata. I remember waking up early on Sundays when I was a kid to watch an hour of the TV adaptation of the book (That TV show apparently holds the record for the most watched show ever!). The characters from the book, let it be the famous Arjuna or the divine Krishna or the giving Karna or the brave Abhimanyu or even the cunning Shakuni, were characters we knew even as kids. We grew up hearing their stories and understanding their greatness. In every sense, Mahābhārata has been and will always be a huge part of me.
