Lets be fair, almost all thrillers are similar. They have one of their main characters up against the wall and a sly and devious counterpart that needs the “job” done.

“Red Eye” follows the same pattern. Rachel McAdams plays a Hotel Supervisor that has had to hurry back to her home coz of her Grandmother’s death. In all the hussel of delayed flights she finds the calm and soothing voice of Cillian Murphy. They have a couple of drinks and talk a little before heading for their flights. She soon finds out that he is sitting next to her and the movie seems to be heading the romantic way… untill he reveales to her that he is holding her hostage. To save her dad she has to change the allocated room of one of her guests.

The difference between average and great thrillers is the unpredictability of the movie. For the writers defence, maybe there are not many options on a plane but what about “Air Force One”. Yep, Red Eye very soon becomes a simple hostage movie.

The movie by the end definately does not seem bad but like a shadow of what could have been. For example the “targets”… nothing about them are known. There are intresting people on the plane but they hardly effect the movie. It just becomes a girl’s attempt to pass a message without the knowdledge of her captor.

Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy look good and the former even puts up a decent performance in the film. As for Cillian he does not look very convincing as the captor. His performance in the initial part of the movie convinces me a romantic comedy is more like his genre. Jayma Mays plays a innocent and confused Hotel receptionist who is taking Rachel’s place for the time she is away. She is by far the most convincing and has a great roles ahead of her.

The movie as a whole is worth a watch. Dont expect much its a good movie but could have so eazily been great.
