Is it possible to travel back in time by accelerating at the speed of light? The Twin Paradox can it happen?
Time travel a mission that has intrigued scientists from all around the world. It is believed that accelerating to the speed of light slows down time… this phenomenon is known as time dilation.
Simply Time dilation can be defined as
“The effect occurs when an observer in one frame of reference (defined by velocity or gravitational potential) finds that a clock measuring proper time in another frame of reference is ticking at a different rate with respect to the proper time defined by his own clock.”
Well the best example for it is the thought experiment of the Twin Paradox.
I was thinking about this paradox for a while and being a firm believer that time travel back was impossible… this posed an interesting challenge as here no body was traveling back it just was that one person was traveling thru time faster than the other…
One bro stays on earth and the other goes to outer space traveling conveniently close to the speed of light. When the brother returns after what he feels was like a few weeks, he notices his twin has aged many years…
The first thought I got was… The clocks both of them one with both brothers were designed right here on good ol Earth. So they work on “Earth time”.
What is Earth time?
Lets consider how we measure time… 365 days in a year (12 months), 24 hrs in a day, 60 min in an hour and 60 sec in a min (lets stop there… I hv made sure to omit all fractional time)
That sounds fine doesn’t it…. well lets think about it this way…
365 days a year (measure of time taken by “Earth” to make one trip around the sun)
24 hours (measure of time taken by “Earth” to make one revolution on its axis)
This would hv varied depending on which planet you are on…
Lets consider something more universal how bout lightyears, lighthours and lightmin
Well they are universal arent they… wait a sec light travels at different speeds in different mediums not to mention it can “slowdown” during refraction.
So now the problem is that we dont hv a universally unique method to measure time… wow.
Back to the paradox… you may say… “wait a sec, but one bro is younger than another so who cares about the clocks in the first place… isnt that proof enuf”
well it is and it isnt… I believe that time is universally relative like everything else… similarly our metabolism is relative too… what does that mean… well it means that if you were on Jupiter… you would hv eaten at different times, slept at different times, grow at a different rate and finally… AGE at a different rate.
“Well how do you then explain the stories of a plane arriving 30 min before the time it is supposed to arrive…” Well I cant… (Maybe the engine was the best one they made :)) ) But logically thinking Twin Paradox is like a magic trick… you always end up saying… wow that was cool but how did you do it?
Time is complex entity… and trying to analyze it completely only drives you nuts. :)
