Numbers…

September 25, 2008 11:42 pm

I started reading Fermat’s Last Theorem a few days ago and it has by far been the most gripping non-fiction book I have ever read. This is the second book written by Simon Singh that I have picked up. The Code Book(review) was his other book and I loved it too.

The book is about a mathematical problem that took over 300 years to solve. The ‘last theorem’ is intriguing in itself but what i have enjoyed most about the book so far is the story of Pythagoras and his love for numbers. There is so little I knew about the man who had put forward probably the single most famous theorem in mathematics.

We are a spark from the great fire that was ignited many billions of years ago

- Quote from Sophie’s World

That has to be the most beautiful way to describe the relationship you, me and everyone on this planet has with the the Big Bang :)

Alone…

June 30, 2008 10:44 pm

Sometimes loneliness hits you when you least expect it…
An overwhelming feeling that leaves you drowning in thirst.
I have found that its at these dire moments that I seek solace with words…
And find company in the timeless locked thoughts.

Brand of Philosophy…

February 25, 2008 4:54 pm

Everybody has their own brand of Philosophy. Untill recently I had no idea where my thoughts fitted in.
Its very important to know which brand(s) of Philosophy you follow… once you know you can even predict what your opinion might be with matters that have never bothered you. And then you can question your own thoughts… bit like standing outside glass doors and watching things work!

Who Am I?

Who am I?
Where does the world come from?

Two questions that set you off on the path walked by Philosophical greats before us…

I have been reading Sophie’s World and the book is simply brilliant! So far reading the history of Philosophy has been a beautiful journey through the greatest minds that walked the planet!

Contact - Book Review

January 25, 2008 12:16 pm
Contact
Rating: ★★★★☆

I loved the movie when I watched it a long time back and when I saw the book I just had to read it… I am glad I picked it up :)
Contact the book is very different than Contact the movie… Actually there is just so much brilliant stuff in the book that the movie feels like it was made off a short story :P

The book beautifully captures the lives of people who dedicate their lives for SETI(Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) and the repercussions of a possible contact from a civilization light years away from us. What would happen if they are far more advanced from us? What would their goals be? Their reasons for wanting to speak to us? All that encompassed in a gripping story.

Some of the arguments in the book were excellent and intriguing… Especially the ones that deal with God got me thinking about possibilities I have never fully thought about…

This book is a must read for every atheist… and every one who ever looked up at the sky and thought if there is someone looking back at them millions of miles away.

2007 in Numbers…

One of the biggest advantages of keeping a catalog of the things you do is that after a decent time period(a year) you have a lot of stats!!! I am crazy for statistics and this post is all about stats collected over the year :)

So here they are…
