Thoughts on Random

Random is defined as “lacking any definite plan or order or purpose; governed by or depending on chance;” (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)

I recently have been watching a few videos about the golden ratio. The videos have generally proclaimed the proof of the existence of god based on the existence of patterns in almost everything based on the ratio. Now my idea is not get into religious arguments but I was wondering of a very simple question, “What is the real life example of something truly random?”

For a long time now I have believed that given enough information any event in the universe can be predicted. From the exploding of supernovas(you will need a good understanding of life cycles of stars, the age of the star, the elements on the star and their behavior) to working of relationships (mindsets of those involved, past histories, repressed thoughts and desires, fear, ect.) to an automotive accident (behavior of the driver on the vehicle, the status of the vehicle, the status of the road, the thoughts of the involved people, past experiences on the road of the people).

I believe that if you cant predict an event it means that either you don’t have enough required information or simply that you don’t posses the understanding of making a call like that.

By this definition everything in the universe has to be based on cause and effect; as a corollary there is nothing truly random in the universe.

This does not necessarily mean that our actions are preordained, it just means that if someone knew us well enough they would be able to predict how one would behave at a given situation(but you already knew that).

But the lack of something truly random had me mystified for a while. Either I haven’t put enough effort into finding something truly random or nothing truly random can ever exist! Assuming the latter it would mean that all this hue and cry about a pattern is very frivolous, considering our universe is probably packed with billions of such occurrences.

What is amazing is that if we actually do find something truly random, ‘that; would be great evidence of the existence of god!
