In the best Grand Prix of the year Kimi took the Chequered flag to win the second time in a row at Spa Francorchamps. Fernando Alonso crossed the finish line second to leave only a mear fromality to be finished in Brazil.
The race was wet almost throughout still not a drop of rain fell during the race. The top teams ran their cars from start to finish on intermediate tyres and the gamble payed off. At the start Michael Schumacher gained a place and looked threatening as the scarlet car’s Bridgestone tyres soared the circuit. It was an incident caused by the flying Gincarlo Fisichella, the third fastest man started on 13th thanks to a engine change penalty. After a casual start his climb up the grid looked threatening but a spin at Eau Rouge took him out of contention.
The cars made a beeline for the pitlane as a safety car was called to service. In one of the most daring moves of his career Kimi Raikonnen decided to slowdown right at the start of the pitlane. This was great for the finn as it held up Alonso with the rest of the grid having no way to come into the pit lane. After Montoya’s pitstop Kimi left his grasp on the entrance and the cars began to pour in. The tactic(fair or unfair) was ingenious as it did exactly what Kimi needed. After the first set of pitstops it was Montoya Ralf Kimi and Alonso.
Ralf was truly in contention for the win… alas his decision to switch to dry weather tyres costed him the race. The clearly inaccurate judgement forced another pitstop and left his challenge to Montoya blunt.
When the second round of pitstops came about there were only two questions. Dry weather tyres or Intermidiates? and Will Montoya fight Kimi for a win? The second seemed obvious… Montoya had mentioned that he was ready to help Kimi come the situation but Kimi had other things on mind. Lapping at a mind boggling 3 seconds a lap faster than Montoya and Alonso he casually took away the lead.
Montoya was all set untill 4 laps to go… Pizonia in the Williams decided to unlap himself and saw a slowing Montoya. He took the chance and both ended in the rubble. The victor, Alonso and Renault. If Montoya had finished 2nd that would hv meant for the first time this season Renault would hv been in 2nd place in the Constructors Champioship.
He also handed Alonso 2 more points for his consistency and leaves Alonso with a simple task of making it to the podium(which Alonso had done an unbelieveable 12 times this season… nope its not a typo 12 times out of 16) in Brazil and be crowned the Youngest Champion in Formula One History.
Button drove a spectacular last part of the race on dry weather tyres and came as close as 3 seconds to Alonso at the finish.
Over to Brazil and Interlagos… Renault have a major Aerodynamic and Engine upgrade, they believe it can challenge the Mc Laren probably beat them :). All in all the Constructors Champioship seem to be chase that will go down to the wire :).
