Late last evening (Dec 28, 2005 7:20 Pm) Indian Institute of Science(IISc) Bangalore was attacked by intruder(s). 1 Professor was killed and about 6 injured in the attack. The attack was shock and Bangalore still seems to be stirred with the impact.
This is how a news channel reported it:
Gunmen kill scientist in IISc Bangalore:
A retired IIT, Delhi professor has been shot dead and four others injured in a shootout at the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) in Bangalore.
According to the police, four to five persons came in a white Ambassador car inside the campus of the Institute and opened fire from automatic weapons outside the J N Tata auditorium.
An AK-47 rifle, three magazines of an automatic weapon and a hand grenade were recovered from the scene of firing, police sources said.
The speculation on how many people were involved and if it was a terrorist attack is still not clear.
The attack is scary and close to home considering my office is about 5 min away from IISc. Not to mention that I was there a few days ago.
I still dont understand what the terrorists mean to achieve. Attacking an educational institute is a sad and cowardly move. I guess they sleep better at night if they know they killed someone innocent.
If they were Kashmiri militants and wanted to make a statement about getting freedom or something I have to quote a statement from Swami Vivekananda:
You want freedom, Give me Men not Brutes and I will give you freedom. I can give you freedom tommorow but can you give me the Men who will protect it?
I guess they are actually worthy of being leaders if they decide that innocent need to be hurt and killed.
If they are doing this out of religious prejudice, all I ask is will killing Innocent make you more religious or earn you a place in heaven or make your god stronger.
The Kandahar incident in the end of the last decade was one of the starting points for all this. When terrorists took over a plane and threatened to kill its passengers unless their leader was released, we should have guessed it would only give them more confidence later. The incident ended with the release of 3 dangerous terrorists.
This is sad and scary at the same time. The safe haven that was Bangalore has been threatened and it wont make sleeping at night easier.
