Burn After Reading – Movie Review

burn after reading
[rating:4.5/5]

With a spectacular cast, that constitutes John Malkovich, George Clooney & Brad Pitt, Burn After Reading is a satire about the nuances of the world of spying… but wait a second its not about the spies themselves but the people that work somewhere around them…

Osbourne Cox, a Balkan expert, is fired at the CIA, so he begins a memoir. His wife wants a divorce and expects her lover, Harry, a philandering State Department marshal, to leave his wife. A diskette falls out of a gym bag at a Georgetown fitness center. Two employees there try to turn it into cash: Linda, who wants money for elective surgery, and Chad, an amiable goof. Information on the disc leads them to Osbourne who rejects their sales pitch; then they visit the Russian embassy. To sweeten the pot, they decide they need more of Osbourne’s secrets. Meanwhile, Linda’s boss likes her, and Harry’s wife leaves for a book tour. All roads lead to Osbourne’s house. (Plot from IMDB)

BAR is easily one of the most hilarious movies I have seen in a while. The plot is so complex and brilliant, the characters are seriously screwed up and funny & the situations are unexpected and well written. This movie was nowhere I expected it to be and still worked very well.

The icing of the movie has to be its actors. In a stand out performance it has to be Brad Pitt who plays a dumb gym instructor. His reference of the memoirs as “shit” is beyond hilarious. George Clooney is amazing(as usual) as the suave State Department marshal and slowly comes to his own in the movie. And finally, John Malkovich, brilliant as usual… A tad bit of the same old same old but still, none can play it like him.

Two thumbs up to this Coen Brothers movie. Considering they wrote movies like No Country for Old Men, The Ladykillers, O Brother, Where Art Thou? & Fargo, do you even need a reason to check out this movie?
