Ab Mujhe Koi (Ishqiya) – Lyrics English Meaning/Translation

Ishqiya

Image via Wikipedia

Ishqiya was one of my favorite movies of 2010. The movie’s soundtrack is one of the best of the year and this song in it, has to be my favorite.

Gulzar saab in this song talks about how a lover perceives time after losing the beloved forever. The concept that suffering is described as a lack of waiting is simply amazing.

This slow haunting song absolutely resonates with the heart. The pain of losing someone close to you is so beautifully described that it draws tears to the eyes.

Lyrics: Gulzar
Album: Ishqiya
Vocals: Rekha Bhardwaj
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj

Here is my translation of the beautiful song:

Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan
Woh jo behthe thhe… Abshaar kahan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan

I dont wait for anything any longer
The falls (of tears) which used to flow… flow no longer
I dont wait for anything any longer

Aankh ke ek gaaon mein,
Raat ko khwaab aate thhe
Chuney se behthe thhe,
bole toh kehte thhe.
Udthe khwaabon ka aietbaar kahan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan

In the village of eyes,
Dreams used to come in the nights,
Which flowed when touched,
Which spoke when spoken to
But how can one trust flowing dreams
I don’t wait for anything any longer

Jin dino aap rehte thhe
Aankh mein dhoop thi
Abh to jaale hi jaale hain
Yeh bhi jaane hi wale hain
Woh jo tha dard ka karaar kahan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan
Woh jo behthe the abshaar kahan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan

The days when you were here,
My eyes had sunshine
Now there are cobwebs everywhere,
Even they are going to leave me soon
The soothingness after pain that used to be there… is there no longer
I don’t wait for anything any longer
The falls which used to flow… flow no longer
I don’t wait for anything any longer

  • One of my favorites!!! I did not know the meaning and after reading your description the song has become doubly beautiful! I love these poetic songs with simple music, very easy to sing along or hum and enjoy the song whenever and wherever I feel like it :-)

    BTW what is abshaar? Waterfall?

  • Yep it means Waterfall, but poetically can be used for stream or Oasis :)

  • Any plans to translate Badi Dheere Jali? I cannot understand a few words in that song too :-)

  • Will do it after finishing the project, already have the list of songs to translate this month :)

  • Hi i am looking for the translation for Badi dheera jali … will it be possible for you to do the translation for me please ?
