I finally managed to catch TZP and got a few surprises through the movie.
Firstly the background score was brilliant, it complemented the scenes very well and really pepped up the emotional scenes. Acting wise the actors were all impressive. The kid(Darsheel Safary)’s performance was top notch and held the movie together very well. Aamir Khan seemed to have played himself in the movie. I have seen interviews of him and he seemed to be the same person in the movie. The role truly required someone like that so it fit in very well.
There were a few other things I was very impressed with in the movie. Take for example the scene where Aamir returns to his old school. More precisely the scene where he talks with the female teacher… that scene was beautifully written as nothing about her was known and yet the dialog gave enough to make her a part of the story. The conversation was very simple and original, that scene was when I was certain that the writing was one of the best.
Aamir has a reputation of being a perfectionist and I was impressed with the handling of facts in the movie. While talking about great people who were also Dyslexic he mentions accurately that Albert Einstein got his Nobel prize for his work on photo electric effect… this might seem odd but most movies I have seen (and some documentaries) wrongly imply that he got it for General Relativity. Factually the movie did not slip into a children’s movie and that was a great move.
What surprised me the most at the end was how did a movie like this become such a big hit. With quality I rate this movie very close to Iqbal but this movie it turns out was a bigger hit. Not that the story was bad but just that I wouldn’t have predicted the impact accurately for this one. During a conversation with my colleagues they told me that it was pretty clear why this movie got such a unanimous response… There just haven’t been enough decent movies that would suit both the young audience and thier parents… They explained to me that it was why a movie like Krrish became a hit!
Thinking about it I have to agree… Aamir has made a very smart business move making a film like this(in the words of my colleague)… I am really interested in watching Gajini now(not that I wouldn’t have been interested otherwise).
TZP is very good movie… I wont say it was the best movie from last year(2007) but it has been one of the better ones to come from the Hindi Film industry. I hope more movies of this sort are made.
