Dance To My Tunes…

Recently Listened Tracks

I have been giving Last.fm a nice run for a while now. The site gathers statistics of the songs, artists, albums and the like. The site doubles up as a music based social networking service… Frankly after Orkut this is the only social networking site that has managed to actually get me interested. The stats are brilliant and things like ‘similar artists’, ‘neighborhood’ (people around you who listen to the same music) and ‘recommended tracks’ (based on your playlists) just keep you hooked(for a while atleast).

What I enjoy most is looking at things which I never knew about myself. For example I always knew that ‘Shaan’ was my favorite singer and guess what I listen to songs sung by Shaan much much more often than I even thought. Looking back at stats like ‘weekly favourite artists’ can tell you what you listen based on your mood. I normally have my playlist set at random and just skip songs I dont feel like listening, fortunately last.fm requires you to listen to atleast half the length of the song to have it added to its list.

Best of all there are simple plugins to your favorite music player(I use Amarok(kubuntu) and iTunes(Windows)) so that you don’t need to do any special effort after you have installed it, just listen to your music as usual(after the initial configuration of ur username/pwd ect) and the info is gathered and sent to the site at regular intervals.

There is a new word around on the web and its called ‘Scrobbling‘ and if you plan to join in, feel free to add me as a friend (My page: http://www.last.fm/user/arncreddy296/ ). I don’t visit the site very often but whenever I do I usually find something new and interesting about my listening habits.
