Dear Shahrukh Khan,
I know I haven’t written in a long time, I am sincerely sorry for that. But when I saw Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi I thought I should write my review directly to you.
Firstly thank you for Surinder Sahni, he made watching RNBDJ(I know the acronym does not work) a pleasure. It would be hard to find a movie critic who didn’t think that it was possibly the most honest performance they have seen in a while.
Honestly RNBDJ minus Surinder Sahni isnt actually much. The concept was sweet and made you think but the execution and screenplay simply left a void along the way somewhere. I understand Aditya Chopra is a dear friend but didn’t it seem to you that something was wrong when you were saying one too many (stretched) emotional monologues in the film.
There is a constant struggle in the viewers mind whether to love or hate the movie. Every time you are in the verge of hating the movie (I think i have mentioned the monologues) something really sweet or funny happens and it pulls you right back. Not sure if it was intended but this would make very few people totally hate the movie.
The comedy is beautifully subtle and that made it really fun. The flow of the movie wasnt great and at times it felt that some scenes were simply over cooked. Very often something that could have been said in a simple profound way was destroyed by a bunch of simple dialogues that made the idea fit a frame.
Music and the background score was good. The songs were fine until, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte. Seriously that trick of getting a lot of your friends into your songs is simply getting old. Actually it would have been fine if that song didnt have such a bad timing totally stopping the flow of the movie.
Lately you have this amazing ability to get really talented supporting actors to your films. Shreyas Talpade was briliant in Om Shanti Om and Vinay Pathak was simply amazing in this one. Anushka Sharma acting left a lot to be desired but considering it was her debut movie I wont be too hard on her. As for you, let me just say Sahni was really adorable and Raj was a little clichéd. During the middle half of the film which was dominated by Raj, the absence of Sahni clearly made it less fun.
The credits were simply brilliant. In my opinion that was the best last few mins of a movie in a long time. It makes sure that you leave the theater loving it and that is always great.
All in all I think your fans wont be disappointed. You critics have enough reason to love or hate this movie, its simply upto them. Personally I am recommending the movie to all my friends. They simply need to meet Mr. Surinder Sahni.
