Understanding Friends…

A couple of days back while discussing with my friends we hit upon an interesting subject. The point of focus was one of us and the argument was mostly directed at the person. The gist of the idea was what struck me the most. The premise was that most of my friends shared their ideas, problems and daily events to one of my friends who is an amazing listener. What they felt was that it was unfair that they never got the opportunity to return the favor. This person felt that the idea of bothering someone with his/her problems would simply waste their time (and would not interest them).

I wont go into where the argument swayed and what we learned about ourselves but rather I will use this opportunity to tell you a story from my life that is pretty similar, which I have been waiting for a while to narrate…

Knowing…

I watched The Bucket List a couple of days ago. I thought the movie was enjoyable and had loads of important messages. One particular conversation that caught my attention was when Carter mentions the two questions that Egyptians believed would be asked before entry to heaven. The two questions where

1. Did you in this life experience happiness?
2. Did you in this life bring happiness to others?

How could a ‘Slumdog’ win so much?

That seems to be the question on the minds of a lot of people. I have heard people calling the movie “overrated”, saying that “Rehman has made better music”, “there weren’t enough nominees”, “would it have won the oscar if an Indian had done it” and questioning the “depiction of India”.

Honestly I am not normally bothered by opinions. I accept that its just another opinion and as important as mine and move on. But in this case I find the arguments ‘unconvincing’(I am putting it mildly to avoid insulting anyone). Now lets examine each of the arguments…

Penned Magic…

The most ignored of the 3 indians that won the Oscar yesterday has to be Gulzar saab. Amoung all the celebration apparently a lot of people missed noticing that he had won the award for penning the lyrics of “Jai Ho!”, mostly because he did not pick up the award in person.

It turns out that one of my all time favorite songs is his favorite too :) Read More

Golden Statuettes

When I was in college I would make it a point to watch the oscars every time. I would actually prepare myself for the oscars by trying to watch as many of the movies nominated for the top awards as possible. Each time I would have my set of picks and back a few performances and movies. Almost always my picks would fail to win the big prize.

This year I didnt watch many of the nominated movies. I didnt even know till yest evening that the event was today. I tuned in to cheer for Slumdog and ARR. I felt slumdog was a very special movie. For me the reason I loved it was more personal and that is why you never saw a review of the movie here.

I cant get the words to describe AR Rehman, ever since I heard the soundtrack of Dil Se I have been a fan of the ‘Mozart from Madras’. He truly deserves all the glory being showered on him.

Back to the Oscars, this year almost all the stars I backed(mostly after the nominations were announced) won! I was cheering for Penolope Cruz, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet, Sean Penn and ofcourse Slumdog. I was pumping my fist in the air when ARR won his two oscars and couldnt help but smile when Resul Pookutty gave that beautiful acceptance speech.

Honestly this was the best Oscars for me. I cant remember watching an awards show with so much excitement(even though we all knew who would win).

Now I need to watch Milk and The Reader (among other movies) :P
