Guru

January 26, 2007 11:32 pm

Rating: ★★★½☆

Watched Guru with friends in the evening today. Went in expecting it to be a combo of the story of DhiruBhai Ambani(and Reliance) and story of Gail Wayland(from Ayn Rand’s FountainHead). Dont ask me why I thought of the latter but I was pretty right in guessing so. What surprised me was that parts of the movie(esp the Climax) resembled “The Avaiator”.

10 min into the movie and I am in absolute awe of ‘Ratnam Magic’. There is this amazing way of painting a screen that he is brilliant at. The movie’s first half is simply beautifully scenic and for a moment or two you have to hold your breadth to savor the sunset behind the train station or the green fields behind a twirling Ash. This was clearly the best part of the movie.

Another thing that stood out in the movie was the Romance, it was simply sublime. Ratnam has this subtle way of showing love which is just well nice to see :)

Acting wise Abhishek was good. I still think his performance in KANK was his best ever but this is clearly a step in the right direction. I guess you cant expect a single character to get much importance in a Mani Ratnam movie even if its the lead. I would like to see him play a role where he has to carry the entire movie on his shoulders.

Ash was ok, frankly anyone could have played her role. Madhavan was good, but it was a supporting role and he gave it his best. Vidhya Balan came and went on screen a few times. Mithun was the refreshing surprise, It was nice to see him again on the screen.

I did hate the ending, the speech at the end was good and the last line about the “30 second ka munafa” (profit of 30 seconds) was simply brilliant but it almost made no sense plus they did not give closure to Mithun’s and Madhavan’s character…

All in all a decent movie to catch on a nice weekend evening :)

Less coz of ‘More’

January 23, 2007 5:23 pm

People who have been reading my blog for a while now must have been surprised with my blogging silence for the last couple of days… Hell if you have been observing closely you might have realized that my blogging has been taking a hit from the start of the year(just 6 posts in this month so far!)

Well there is a valid reason for it :)

Firstly, I have been engrossed in a new hobby from last fortnight of 2006, a few of my friends have seen my handiwork in person and most of my orkut friends will know what I am talking about :P More on this soon…

The hobby took most of my evenings but that was only till the first week of the new year(why? wait for that post) After that I got hit by the worst case of Writer Block ever :( I tried everything I could but could not find the drive to write, then my last post happened… I have no Idea what it did but the Writer block was gone and all I wanted to do was write after that :) I decided to put my new found inspiration to write a short short that hit me in the spur of the moment. I have been giving a lot of time for the story and that explains why nothing new came from my side for the last week. I was pretty sick during the weekend and that slowed down my progress on the story… To add to the delays this looks like the longest short-story I have ever written (Yeah thats what I said :P )

Anyway Bottom Line, I wont be writing often for only a little while more :) Enjoy the silence while it lasts :D

Debt…

January 16, 2007 10:55 pm

Entry in my personal journal. Dated: 06-01-07

Its not great to be indebted and sometimes its just painful, but there are those few moments when you realize that the debt is so kind in its way that you feel honored to be indebted.

Sometimes months roll on and sometimes years and the debt remains, you look for every small opportunity to pay it back… Then one fine day the opportunity shows up, you stand and embrace it and when you reach the other side of the river you realize that absolute truth… The debt never existed and it can never be paid back in this lifetime or the next. You stop look back and smile, deep down hoping that one day you would be so kind to someone that they would be honored to carry your debt till their last breath…

An update on my current hair situation:

hair sm

I had carried the long hair for like 6 months before switching to ^… For the record I was not thrilled to make the change, lets just say some external influence did the work :P Anyway the whole experience taught me to take my hair much more seriously… Watch out for more hair based experiments at regular intervals :)

Melodious Night…

January 11, 2007 10:41 pm

The last night we spent in Wayanad was already looking perfect… The last three days had gone like a snap and we were all in ways gearing up for our return trip the next day… We had bunched up in a room(all 15 of us) and were chatting into the night, at around midnight it started, I hardly remember what started it but the best comparison I can find is the Mexican wave in a stadium… You have no idea who and where it started but feel so much a part of it :P

We had all begun to sing… We started with classic Kishore Kumar numbers switched slowly to generic classic and after about 2-3 hours it did not matter which era the song was from. When we stopped singing it was 4 am! What was incredible was that in those 4 hours we repeated only 2 songs! We had sung in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada(hardly 10 songs of the latter two but atleast that much)

My moment was possibly when I sang “Kahike Paan Banaras Wala” from the new Don, man was I in a trance… I think I danced a little too :P

According to calculations we sang around 150 unique songs that night(even the most generous of assumptions is over 100) Frankly we were not that bad wrt lyrics getting atleast 75% of most songs perfectly! People kept saying we should hv noted the songs we sang coz THAT was a collection :D

When we went to bed that night(or should I say morning) I knew each one of us felt that “Summer of 69″ like moment… Damn it felt great.

Trip to Wayanad…

January 10, 2007 5:29 pm
Sunset

The memory maker went into overtime for most of last week as my pals and I crashed into Wayanad in Kerala for a well earned mini vacation. The 4 day trip was highly eventful and we had loads of fun.
