I saw the Clean & Green article on Metblogs and arrived here to comment since their comments are now closed. In the comments there I read allegations and defense on the issue of this being a PR campaign for the corporate sponsor with all the media coverage.

I would like to object to the criticism of Clean & Green primarily being a PR exercise for corporations. It is VERY, VERY important these projects get media coverage for the primary reason of raising public awareness until it becomes ingrained the Indian psyche that litter is unacceptable. Awareness and cultural change take years, but it is the only method that works. It's proven to work as well, keep the public spotlight on these events. If a corporate sponsor benefits, all the better. Then more corporations will join in and the virtuous circle will continue to clean up litter and instill a culture that will not tolerate littering. Everyone will be better for it.
